What Is E1-Certified Board? Health and Durability in Kitchen Cabinets

The quality of a kitchen cabinet starts in its body, well before the visible door. Every Rubino module is built from 18 mm E1-certified melamine-faced board. So what exactly does "E1" mean, and why does it matter for a project?

What is the E1 class?

E1 is the European standard that classifies a board's formaldehyde emission (EN 13986 / EN 717). The E1 class marks the lowest emission threshold accepted for human health in enclosed spaces. In a kitchen — used all day, often with limited ventilation — this threshold directly affects indoor air quality.

For a contractor or architect the practical takeaway is clear: E1-certified board sets a baseline that won't be questioned for material compliance at handover.

Why an 18 mm body matters

16 mm — or even thinner — bodies are common in the market. Rubino keeps the 18 mm body standard across all base, wall and tall modules. Those 2 mm show up in three places:

Edge banding and moisture resistance
